The Voicemail That Shouldn’t Exist….
The Voicemail That Shouldn’t Exist
The Voice Behind the Door
Maya stopped breathing.
“…Maya?”
It came again.
Weak.
Barely there.
But unmistakable.
Her name.
From the other side of the locked door.
Her fingers went numb.
“That’s not possible…” she whispered.
Behind her, her mother broke.
“It’s him.”
The words came out in a quiet, defeated breath.
Not denial.
Not confusion.
A confession.
Fifteen Years of Silence
Maya turned slowly.
“What did you just say?”
Her mother’s eyes filled with tears.
“I said… it’s him.”
Maya shook her head.
“No. No, you told me he died. You made me go to his funeral.”
“I know.”
“Then who is behind that door?!”
Silence stretched between them.
Heavy.
Crushing.
And then—
Her mother said the one thing Maya wasn’t ready to hear.
“The man you buried… wasn’t your father.”
The Lie That Replaced the Truth
Maya stumbled back a step.
Her mind refusing to process it.
“That’s insane.”
“I wish it was.”
Her mother wiped her tears, but her hands wouldn’t stop shaking.
“You were too young. You wouldn’t have understood.”
“Try me,” Maya snapped.
Her voice cracked.
“Because right now, nothing makes sense.”
The Night Everything Changed
Her mother looked at the door.
Then back at Maya.
And finally—
She spoke.
“Fifteen years ago… your father found something.”
Maya’s chest tightened.
“What?”
“I never knew exactly. He wouldn’t tell me everything. Just that it was dangerous. That people were involved… powerful people.”
Maya felt her pulse rise.
“And?”
“And he said if anything happened to him, I had to disappear. Take you. Forget everything.”
Her mother’s voice trembled.
“But I didn’t listen.”
The Mistake That Cost Everything
Maya’s stomach dropped.
“What did you do?”
“I confronted him,” she said. “I pushed him to tell me the truth. I didn’t understand how serious it was.”
Her voice broke.
“That was the last normal night we ever had.”
Maya’s breathing became uneven.
“What happened after that?”
Her mother hesitated.
Then—
“They came.”
The Men Who Took Him
The room felt colder.
“They broke into the house,” her mother continued. “Middle of the night. I woke up to shouting… fighting…”
Maya’s hands clenched.
“And you didn’t call the police?!”
“I tried!” she snapped. “But it was already too late.”
Tears streamed down her face now.
“They took him, Maya. Right in front of me.”
Maya’s world tilted.
“They… kidnapped him?”
Her mother nodded slowly.
“But the next morning…”
She paused.
Her entire body stiff.
“They brought back a body.”
The Funeral That Was a Lie
Maya’s throat went dry.
“…What?”
“It looked like him,” her mother whispered. “Same height. Same build. But I knew…”
She shook her head.
“It wasn’t your father.”
Maya felt sick.
“And you still buried him?”
“I had no choice!” she cried. “They were watching me. Watching you. If I said anything—if I reacted—they would’ve taken you too.”
Silence fell.
Heavy.
Unforgiving.
The Truth Locked Away
Maya slowly turned back toward the door.
Her heart pounding harder than ever.
“So… you kept him here?”
Her mother closed her eyes.
“I didn’t know what else to do.”
Maya spun around.
“You didn’t know what else to do?! You locked him in a storage unit for FIFTEEN YEARS?!”
“I was protecting you!”
“From what?!”
“From the same people who took him!”
The Voice That Never Gave Up
A weak knock came from the other side of the door.
Maya flinched.
“…Maya…” the voice called again.
Fainter this time.
Breaking.
Her chest tightened painfully.
“That’s him,” she whispered.
Her mother didn’t respond.
Didn’t deny it.
That silence confirmed everything.
The Key She Was Never Meant to Use
Maya looked at the lock.
New.
Clean.
Used.
Recently.
“You’ve been coming here,” she said slowly.
Her mother didn’t answer.
“You’ve been keeping him alive.”
Still nothing.
Maya’s voice dropped.
“How long?”
A long pause.
Then—
“Since the day they took him.”
Maya felt something inside her snap.
The Decision That Changes Everything
She stepped toward the door.
Her hand hovering over the lock.
“Don’t,” her mother said quickly.
Maya didn’t look back.
“Why not?”
“Because if you open that door… everything comes back.”
Maya’s grip tightened.
“What does that even mean?”
Her mother’s voice dropped to a whisper.
“It means they’ll know.”
Maya froze.
“…Who?”
Her mother’s eyes filled with fear.
Real fear.
“The people your father was hiding from.”
And Then It Got Worse
Silence.
Stillness.
Tension so thick it was suffocating.
And then—
A sound.
Not from behind the door.
From outside.
Footsteps.
Multiple.
Slow.
Approaching.
Maya turned toward the storage unit entrance.
Her heart stopped.
Shadows moved under the gap of the door.
More than one.
Then—
A voice from outside.
Calm.
Controlled.
Right at the entrance.
“We know she’s inside.”
Maya’s blood ran cold.
Her mother grabbed her arm.
Too tight.
Too desperate.
“I told you not to come here…”
The Worst Part
The voice behind the locked door spoke again.
Weaker now.
Urgent.
“Maya… listen to me…”
She leaned closer.
Tears in her eyes.
“I’m here…”
A pause.
Then—
Her father whispered something that shattered everything she thought she understood.
“Don’t open this door…”
Maya froze.
“What…?”
Her heart pounded violently.
“Why not?!”
Silence.
Then—
His final words.
Barely audible.
“They didn’t just take me…”
A breath.
Shaking.
Terrified.
“They changed me.”
